The economic recession has only slowed down the growth of the information technology industry—it hasn’t stopped it. The field is still growing with continued innovation and consumer interest, and increasing dependability. IT has become vital to businesses, government offices, and homes across the nation. Professionals in the field are always in demand, and some IT or tech jobs can be quite financially rewarding.

So if that’s something you really want to shoot for, here are four of the highest paying jobs in the IT field:

Chief Information Officer

The CIO is the senior executive responsible for information technology and other computer systems in an organization. This important position manages the implementation and integration of technology, and can have a starting pay of over $100,000. After a few years, the CIO can make over twice that and even more if working for a large corporation.

Chief Technology Officer

If the CIO manages the implementation of existing technologies in an organization, a CTO, on the other hand, is another executive position that oversees the development of new technologies. The CTO is also an important position, and generally reports directly to an organization’s CEO. The CTO can pull salaries comparable to the CIO, possibly even more in large global companies.

Software Engineer

The software engineer develops the software that technologies and computer systems use. They design the software, write it and test it. Without software engineers, the CTO would have few people to oversee. A software engineer can potentially earn around a $100,000 annually.

Systems Manager

Also called an IT manager, the systems manager works under the CIO and maintains the computer systems for a business or other organization. They supervise programmers and engineers and monitor computer systems. A systems manager can earn around (and sometimes more than) $100,000 a year.

These jobs generally require advanced college degrees, but it is possible for people with Associates or Bachelor’s degrees to get hired.

Internet job portals may have thousands of information technology listings from hundreds of companies. So even if you have a degree and relevant experience, you might be hard-pressed to stand out in the confusing crowd of applicants and employers.
